The Journey Within

Time stands still
Only waves shush me.
Take care traveller,
In the search for happiness
One may miss its kiss
On the rose sunrise
Reflected on the snow-iced mountains
Early as you rise;
Or on the laughter of a friend
Whose eyes sparkle in time with her wine;
Or on the moments of peace in your world
When all slows down, to a breath,
To a heart beat,
To a deep and well-remembered emptiness.

On my gentle quest within what have I learned so far that has meaning for me?
I have seen that in a frantic search for happiness one can let it slip through one’s fingers, and miss its passing. There it was on that walk through the forest with the sunrays pyramiding down through the foliage. There it was again around the dining table, candles flickering in friends’ eyes whilst their laughter fills the night. There it was again as you sit on a beach and watch the waves rumble and tumble and you collect the prettiest sea shells in your hand.

This has of course been written about by countless gurus. A famous teacher is Eckert Tolle whose book “The Power of Now” has been read by millions. The philosophy of living in the present is taught widely and it is helpful to realise that it’s no use fretting about the past, it’s gone, it no longer exists, neither does the future so do not worry your head about it. Just focus on being here, now, and usually you can appreciate what is in that moment.

Being still and silencing the mind is a recipe for finding peace and calm, but also for being energised to radiate these states outwards to others. Meditation is the best way to reach this silence, but sitting quietly by a stream, a lake, or on a mountain top can be just as effective I find. Sometimes one can get a sense of this inner peace through individual physical exercise too, ask the long-distance runner, the swimmer, or the person doing yoga or tai-chi.

Above all, for me the inner journey is one of seeking improvement in oneself so that you can offer the people around you greater patience, care, and understanding and thereby contribute this ‘vibration’ to our world as much as one is able.

    Love that imagery
